Siem Reap - A heritage keeper

When coming to Cambodia, visitors seem to enter another world: ancient, mossy, majestic and somewhat mysterious. The ancient capital of Siem Reap is one of the cities that preserves many of the most typical heritages of Khmer culture and is also an attractive tourist destination in Cambodia. According to Cambodia travel experience, Siem Reap weather is most pleasant in the dry season, from December to May every year.

The scenery

1. Angkor Wat Temple: Recognized by UNESCO as a world cultural heritage site in 1992, Angkor's relic complex spans more than 248 square miles (400 km²), including many monuments inspired by Ancient Khmer architecture. Interestingly, Angkor Wat is the most prominent with 5 towers, representing the legendary Mount Meru, a giant crown towards the brilliant sunset. The bottom line is that Angkor Wat temple is the only one built facing the West.

2. Tonle Sap Lake: Formed from the largest river and lake system in Cambodia, Tonle Sap is also known as Cambodia Lake and was recognized by UNESCO as a world biosphere reserve in 1997. Tonle Sap differs from the busy lifestyle of the indigenous Khmer people on the river: the simple floating village of Kampong Phluk; the boats traveling all year round with the cheerful floating market atmosphere with all kinds of goods... If traveling to Siem Reap around May, from December to February, visitors will admire the strange infinity water surface at Tonle Sap lake.

Cuisine

As the "food capital" of Cambodia, specialty dishes are at visitors’s elbow when visiting many local markets. Skun insect market is one of a kind. The best-selling insects here are crickets, grasshoppers, spiders, eggplants, scorpions, silkworm pupae, etc. Is the smell of fried insects seasoned with aromatic spices attractive enough for you to overcome your fear? initial?

If you’re not fond of the taste of insects, you can enjoy Amok steamed fish - known as the most delicious and quintessential dish of the land of pagodas and temples: the strong fleshy taste of river fish, the aroma of banana leaf peel, the softness of eggs, the fatty taste of coconut milk, the faint sweetness of jaggery. Amok steamed fish looks simple at first glance, but the flavor contains the best of Cambodian cuisine.

Activities

Siem Reap city not only preserves the typical temple heritage of the country of pagodas and pagodas, but also carries within itself the cultural - historical - artistic flow of Cambodia through a meaningful museum system.

Located on Xiao Angkor Road in the center of Siem Reap city, Angkor National Museum is as beautiful as a white castle. It displays more than 1000 specimens dating from the 9th to the 12th centuries, providing diverse information about the vitality of the Khmer civilization. Coming here, visitors can admire Cambodia from a different perspective: sophistication and creativity.

Reverting to the modern rhythm of a prosperous city, the Angkor night market is a must-see spot. Open from 4 pm to 12 pm, Angkor night market "forces" visitors to stay up late to discover Siem Reap with 1-0-2 specialties: jewelry made from bullet casings, snacks from insects, foot massage service with fish right at the market counter…

Otherwise, Siem Reap in April will welcome you with one of a lifetime experience, the Chol Chnam Thmay New Year festival - the biggest festival of the year for Cambodians.
