1. Overview of Cat Ba Island Vietnam
1.1. Location
Cat Ba Island is situated in Tran Chau Town, Cat Hai Commune, Hai Phong City , approximately 150km southeast of Hanoi, and about 30km from the famous Ha Long Bay. Despite being close to popular tourist hubs, Cat Ba retains a quieter, more tranquil vibe, offering an authentic escape into nature.
The island is part of Cat Ba Archipelago, lying on the southwestern edge of Ha Long Bay, and is often considered the lesser-known but equally spectacular sister of the UNESCO-listed bay.
Cat Ba Island spans approximately 285 square kilometers and is shaped somewhat like a teardrop, with rugged coastlines and dramatic limestone cliffs rising from the sea. The island’s terrain is diverse, featuring forested mountains, hidden sandy beaches, and scattered fishing villages.
Around half of the island is protected as Cat Ba National Park, a biodiversity hotspot home to several rare species, including the critically endangered Cat Ba langur. Despite its wild nature, Cat Ba Island is also inhabited, with a population of about 13,000 people. Most residents live in Cat Ba Town, the island’s main urban center, which serves as the hub for tourism, dining, and transportation.
