General Info

Baggage

We understand baggage is an important part of your journey. Vietnam Airlines is pleased to supply useful baggage information as below:


Checked baggage

For health and safety reasons, each piece of baggage that is checked in must not exceed 32kg and total dimensions (width + heights + depth ) must not exceed 203 cm.

Important Notice:

You will be required to re-pack your bag if the weight of a single piece of your checked baggage exceeds 32kg.

Alternatively, you may want to consider sending it as cargo. Please contact us prior to your travel

Hand baggage

Complying with the safety standard, each piece of hand luggage must not exceed 7kg and the total dimensions (width + heights + depth ) must not exceed 115cm (56 cm x 36 cm x 23 cm (or: 22’’ x 11‘’ x 9’’)

Important Notice:

In case your hand baggage exceeds the quantity, weight and dimensions as specified above, your luggage must be checked in.

Baggage tips

  • It’s always helpful to personalize your baggage with stickers or tags. You can also tag your baggage your name and contact information so it could be returned to you easily after flight.
  • We recommend that you pack your belongings in proper suitcases to avoid damage to your luggage or its contents during transport.
  • In order to safeguard your property and to prevent any loss, damages or delay, Vietnam Airlines would like to remind you not to pack any fragile articles, perishable items,or valuable and important personal effects into your checked baggage.

  • Any item that exceeds weight and/or has a maximum size (width + height + depth) mentioned above may be rejected.
  • In addition , we recommend that your checked baggage not exceed 32kg per piece to avoid injury to porters, especially for customers travelling to and from Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Sri Lanka, and the United Kingdom. This is in accordance with the local occupational safety rules.
  • The Free Baggage Allowance might be different for a variety of carriers. If you are connecting to/ from another carrier and if you are taking any Vietnam Airlines code sharing flight which operated by other airlines. Please refer Interline Baggage Rule for detail.

Baggage allowances on codeshare flights

If your itinerary includes flights operated by carriers other than Vietnam Airlines, different baggage rules may apply. Please find full details of your baggage allowances for each flight in your itinerary in your ticket or on the operating carrier’s website before travelling.

Even if you are over your baggage allowance upon arrival at the airport, you are still able to purchase excess baggage at check-in counter.

Prepaid Baggage

PRE-PAID BAGGAGE

If your need to carry baggage that weigh more than your free allowance, you are recommended to take advantage of buying prepaid baggage with a much lower cost comparing to paying for excess baggage at the airport and saving time for your journey.

  • Prepaid baggage is applied for flights wholly on Vietnam Airlines and operated by Vietnam Airlines only.
  • Prepaid baggage need to be purchased at least six (6) hours prior to departure time.
  • Passengers can buy Prepaid baggage at www.vietnamairlines.com or VN branch offices.
  • Prepaid baggage will be sold in blocks of 5kg in weight. Maximum 10 blocks (50kg) can be purchased per passenger.
  • Prepaid baggage compliances with terms and conditions for checked baggage
  • Prepaid baggage is only valid for passengers flying on the flight that was originally booked.
  • Prepaid baggage cannot be endorsed, rerouted, refunded and/or exchanged to other services or tickets. 

Fees for Pre-paid Baggage

Conditions of Purchase:

  • Pre-paid baggage is not applied for Special baggage.
  • Pre-paid baggage is not applied for infants under 2 years old.
  • Pre-paid baggage is not applied for some short domestic sectors operated by small aircraft ATR72.
  • Passengers can buy pre-purchase baggage during the booking process or after successful payment.

  • Exceptions:

Totally unused pre-paid baggage associated to your ticket with an itinerary originating from Korea will be refundable. The refund fee is 25% of the unused pre-paid baggage value.

Pre-paid baggage can be voluntarily changed to other Vietnam Airlines operated flights in the same sector. The change must be done at least 6 hours before departure time of original and new flight.

Special Baggage

FLYING WITH YOUR PET (AVIH)

Vietnam Airlines offer service for passenger traveliing with pet on the same flight. Your pet will be delivered as checked baggage.

Planning for travel with your pet

Passenger travelling with pet as checked baggage should contact Vietnam Airlines branch offices for advanced reservations. It is required to make service request at least 24 hours before departure time.

Passenger contact the appropriate  quarantine office, embassy or consulate… to confirm all necessary documents such as import/export permit, quarantine certificates, health certificates and rabies immunization reports.

  • Restrictions for pets:
We have temperature restrictions to make sure your pet isn’t exposed to extreme heat or cold. So in case of  rough weather reason, you cannot travel with a pet if the current or forecasted temperature is too hot or too cold at any location on the itinerary.

At the airport, passenger will be required to sign “Waiver of responsibility” form. Passenger also can prepare this form in advance by downloading here, complete and bring with you to the check in counter.

FLYING WITH YOUR PET ON BOARD (PETC)

Travelling with your pet on board is the service offered to Vietnam Airlines’ Business, Platinum passsenger and SkyTeam ‘s Elite Plus passenger.

This service is available on Vietnam Airlines operating flights between Hanoi, Hochiminh City, Danang (Vietnam) and Paris Challe De Gaullle (France); Moscow Domodedomo (Russia);  Incheon, Busan Gimhae (South Korea), Guangzhou Baiyun (China), Taipei, Kaohsiung (Chinese Taipei).

Planning for travel with your pet

Passenger contact the appropriate quarantine office, embassy or consulate… to confirm all necessary documents such as quarantine certificates, health certificates and rabies immunization reports…

  • Costs
      Service Dog: Permitted on board at no cost for accopanying their onwner, passengers with disabilities. The dog must sit in front of the passenger. Advance reservation for service dogs is required.  Documents required are mentioned above.

    Cabin Baggage

    Vietnam Airlines offer the additional seat service for baggage onboard the aircraft. For fragile, bulky, or valuable items such as musical instruments, paintings and antiquities, etc. Passengers may have reserved seat(s) beside to secure their belongings during flight.

    Planning for travel

    Passengers wishing to purchase additional seats to stow belongings should contact Vietnam Airlines branch offices for advanced reservations. It is required to make service request at least 24 hours before departure time.
    Cabin baggage must be securely packaged to ensure there are no sharp edges or other characteristics that might damage or puncture the seats, interior walls, other areas onboard the aircraft, or that could pose a risk to passengers during flight.
    The cabin baggage weight must not exceed 75 kg per one seat and the pressure on the seat must not exceed 0.046 kg/cm2 (75 kg 40cm x 40cm total area).

    Bicycles and Sizeable Baggage

    Vietnam Airlines transport bicycle and bulky items as checked baggage.

    • Bulky baggage are items with total dimensions of exceeding 203 cm and/or weighting over 32kg each piece
    • Bicycles to be carried as checked baggage include all kind of regular bikes, sport bikes, powered bikes (operated by thermo-battery or electric-battery etc…).

    Reservation

    • Passengers should contact Vietnam Airlines branch offices for advanced reservations. It is required to make service request at least 24 hours before departure time.
    • For motorcycles and other motorized vehicles, please refer to the information table outlining dangerous goods.

    Packaging
    • Bulky baggage must be packed in a neat manner without sharp-pointed angles
    • Bicycles must be packed in box and satisfies the following requirements:
      1. Handle bars is positioned along the length direction of the bike.
      2. Disassemble and pack the bulky parts like: pedal, lamp, mirror, support pole…
      3. The tires must be flatted before being packed

    Sports Baggage

    Vietnam Airlines offers transport services for sporting equipment such as golf clubs, ski gear, and diving instruments as checked baggage.

    • Golf Set: Includes 01 golf bag containing a maximum of 14 golf clubs, 12 golf balls, putting tees, and 01 pair of golfing shoes not exceeding a total weight of 20 kg. Items outside of this list will not be considered part of the Golf Set. 
    • Skiing Set: Includes 01 set of skis, 01 pair of ski poles, and a pair of ski shoes or boots. Items outside of this list will not be considered part of the Skiing Set. 
    • Surfboard: Includes 01 wave surfing device (surfboard, paddle board, body board, etc…) 
    • Diving Equipment: Includes 01 diving suit, 01 snorkel, 01 pair of fins, and 01 diving mask. Items such as pressure gauges and tanks are considered potentially hazardous and are prohibited.

    Vietnam Airlines provides complimentary transportation services for foldable carriage devices such as prams, infant strollers, wheelchairs, and pushcarts.

    Examples 

    • Example 1: Routing VII – x/SGN – BKK, passenger has an AVIH with weight of 15kgs, the Special baggage charge is sum of charge for domestic sector VII – SGN VND400.000 and international sector SGN – BKK USD75 (within Zone A) 
    • Example 2: Routing LON - x/SGN – SIN, passenger has one Scuba diving equipement set, the Special baggage charge applies for one checked portion LON (Zone C) – SIN (Zone A) : the charge is 150 USD.

    Special Baggage Cancellation Fees

    The refund fee shall be applied if you cancels Special baggage after reservation and payment.

    • Within 24 hours or after flight departure: 50% of Special baggage charge including passenger surcharges.
    • Before 24 hours before flight:  10% of Special baggage charge including passenger surcharges.

    (*) Vietnam Airline’s special baggage policy is applied for flights operated by Vietnam Airlines only. If your itinerary includes sectors operated by other airlines, Special baggage policy of other airlines shall be applied for these sectors.

    Baggage Claim

    DELAYED, DAMAGED AND LOST BAGGAGE

    We aim to always deliver our customers' baggage to its destination. However, from time to time baggage may be damaged, delayed or does not reach its destination due to inclement weather or facility requirements.
    Please accept our sincerest apologies if you have suffered any such issue. In an event such as the above, Vietnam Airlines will do our utmost to resolve the problem.

    Baggage Claim

    If your baggage may be damaged or does not come off the conveyor belt, please file a report with our Lost and Found Counter located at the arrival station, as soon as possible. Our staff or handling agent will provide you assistance.

    If, for some reason, this was not reported at the airport immediately upon arrival, you may submit your Baggage Claim Form within deadlines as below. Claims received after this deadline will be dismissed.

    (*) Vietnam Airlines is not liable for minor damage to your checked-in baggage. Please refer to Liability Release of Checked baggage for more details. 

    Baggage Tracing

    We will initiate the tracing of your baggage through our worldwide computerised tracing system and will keep you informed of the status of your baggage.

    If you have filed a report already, you can use the file reference (eg HANVN12345) to trace your baggage online. Just click on the WORLDTRACER website.

    Baggage Delivery

    We will notify you as soon as your baggage is located and will deliver it to the address you specified, subject to local customs regulations. Alternatively, you may collect your baggage at the airport and we shall be glad to reimburse the transport cost.

    Baggage Compensation

    In the unfortunate event that your baggage is not discovered following a search, Vietnam Airlines will issue compensation 30 - 45 days following your arrival in accordance with the Vietnam Airlines’ Conditions of Carriage. A search can be extended to up to 100 days if you so wish.

    If passenger’s itinerary includes sectors operated by Vietnam Airlines and other airlines: In the event that your baggage is damaged, lost after arriving at your destination via another airline, you should inquire with the airline in question. In the case of code shares operated by other companies, please contact the operating company.

    FORGOTTEN OR MISTAKENLY TAKEN BAGGGAGE

    Forgotten Articles

    Lost property that is discovered within the cabin will be kept at the airport of arrival. Depending upon what it is, unclaimed property found in the cabin will be held by either the Vietnam Airlines baggage office or local airport authorities.

    If you have found personal items that have been left behind in the aircraft cabin, please contact us immediately.

    Checked baggage

    Customers should personally pick up your own checked baggage at the airport baggage conveyor belt upon arrival. In the event that you have forgotten to retrieve your baggage, please contact us  immediately.

    If your baggage is not picked up, Vietnam Airlines will store it for 90 days and assess applicable storage charges. If a passenger fails to claim baggage within 90 days, its disposal is subject to VNA's discretion. 

    Return of Baggage

    If your lost article is found, it will be immediately delivered to the place of your choosing. Customers will be responsible for any shipping fees.

    Items discovered in airport facilities other than the cabin may be kept at the airport building in question, or at a police station. Please inquire using the relevant contact details.

    If you have taken the wrong baggage

    Please immediately return to your airport of arrival, and notify a member of staff.
