Vietnam Airlines Boosts Green Projects for the Environment
In the context of alarming air pollution in many major cities, sustainable development has increasingly become an urgent requirement for society. For industries with a significant environmental impact like aviation, this responsibility is even more pronounced. On its developmental journey, Vietnam Airlines remains steadfast in choosing a growth path associated with environmental protection, step-by-step realizing its "green" commitments through specific, persistent, and profound projects.
"Fly Light": Greening the Skies from Every Flight
As the National Flag Carrier of Vietnam, Vietnam Airlines has always identified emission reduction and resource optimization as inseparable parts of its long-term development strategy. The “Fly Light” (Bay nhẹ) campaign is implemented directly from the airline's core operations with the goal of gradually reducing environmental impacts throughout the entire operational chain.
By optimizing operational processes, enhancing fuel efficiency, reducing energy consumption, and strengthening operational management solutions, “Fly Light” aims to make every flight more efficient, economical, and environmentally friendly.
Vietnam Airlines launched the campaign in Con Dao, a destination rich in ecological and natural value, as a symbolic step in its green development journey. Under the "Fly Light to Con Dao" program, the airline coordinated with local authorities to implement practical activities to reduce environmental impact, promote a green lifestyle, and foster a circular economy on the island district.
In a short period, the program collected over 820 kg of plastic waste and recyclable materials, of which more than 420 kg were sorted and transported to the mainland for recycling, and planted 400 new medicinal trees, contributing to the local ecological improvement.
Continuing this journey, the “Fly Light to Hanoi” campaign focused on operational optimization and fuel efficiency on flights to the capital. As a result, the program helped reduce emissions by 243 tons of CO₂, demonstrating the clear effectiveness of a sustainable development approach through specific, measurable, and long-term solutions.
"Donate Leaves to Patch Forests": Greening the Future from Revived Forests
Parallel to efforts in reducing operational emissions, Vietnam Airlines launched the “Donate Leaves to Patch Forests” (Góp lá vá rừng) program in 2024 as a vital pillar of its sustainability strategy. This project focuses on protecting and restoring forest ecosystems, particularly in areas with high biodiversity value.
In 2025, the program was implemented through a partnership between Vietnam Airlines, MoMo Travel, and PanNature, aiming to restore forests and spread a green living spirit within the community. By the end of 2025, the program successfully reforested 100 hectares of Northwest forests with over 60,000 native trees. This result was achieved through more than 100,000 participations, via two methods: booking Vietnam Airlines tickets on MoMo Travel and voluntary donations.
The distinction of this program lies in its profound and long-term approach. It focuses on ecosystem restoration by prioritizing native tree species to create forests capable of self-development and long-term sustainability. Notably, these restored areas help create habitats for the White-cheeked Black Gibbon, a critically endangered species.
Commitment to Net Zero
In addition to these projects, Vietnam Airlines is researching and implementing the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) on its flights, aligning with the global aviation green transition. The airline also promotes the collection and recycling of plastic waste at cultural and tourism events, such as the "5AM Eye-Conic Hanoi" event, where nearly 100 kg of plastic waste was collected.
In an era where the environment is under great pressure, projects like “Fly Light” and “Donate Leaves to Patch Forests” reflect not only the operational efficiency of Vietnam Airlines but also the power of positive change from the passenger community. This further solidifies the National Flag Carrier's strong commitment to accompanying the Vietnamese Government and the international community toward the goal of Net Zero emissions by 2050.
