[People's Deputies] Vietnam Airlines Launches "Green Alliance" to Drive Sustainable Development

Against the backdrop of Vietnam implementing its National Green Growth Strategy for the 2021–2030 period, with a vision to 2050, Vietnam Airlines’ launch of the "Green Alliance" demonstrates concrete efforts to materialize the nation's sustainable development goals. This initiative is built upon three pillars: Environment, Social, and Governance (ESG), driven by a multi-stakeholder partnership model.

From National Directions to Corporate Leadership

Sustainable development is becoming an absolute imperative for the global aviation industry, which faces growing pressure to reduce emissions and comply with international standards. In Vietnam, the Government has outlined a clear roadmap for green growth, in which state-owned enterprises, especially industry leaders, play a guiding and pioneering role.

As the National Flag Carrier, Vietnam Airlines is not only executing internal solutions but is also step-by-step expanding its scope of action. The airline aims to bridge multiple sectors and fields to amplify efficiency and positive impacts.

The launch of the "Green Alliance" on Earth Day (April 22) marks a clear transition from isolated approaches to organized, collaborative thinking. Instead of deploying separate initiatives, the airline intends to build a connecting platform for regulatory bodies, businesses, and both domestic and international organizations, thereby optimization resource efficiency and scaling up impacts.

Mr. Dang Ngoc Hoa, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Vietnam Airlines, affirmed: "The Green Alliance is not just a cooperative initiative but a long-term commitment to action in our green transition journey. Sustainable development has become an essential requirement for our competitiveness and long-term growth. As the National Flag Carrier, Vietnam Airlines will proactively coordinate with regulatory agencies and partners to implement practical programs, creating sustainable values for both society and the environment."

Prior to establishing the "Green Alliance," Vietnam Airlines had already rolled out various sustainability programs. In the environmental sector, the airline collaborated with agencies to launch the "Fly Light" campaign paired with afforestation projects across various localities. The airline also expanded its project "For a Green and Sustainable Vietnam" via a frequent flyer mile-conversion mechanism, supporting tree-planting initiatives to strive toward net-zero emissions by 2050. Furthermore, Vietnam Airlines continues to participate in SkyTeam's initiatives, promoting "Sustainable Flights," developing emission-reduced flight paths, and deploying carbon offset mechanisms compliant with domestic and international standards.

In healthcare, Vietnam Airlines has mobilized substantial resources for community health initiatives, supporting medical examinations and treatment for thousands of patients, and facilitating numerous surgeries and specialized training programs for medical staff. The airline also maintains flights to transport tissues and organs, helping save many lives, while organizing voluntary blood donation drives with large-scale participation from its employees.

In education and social welfare, the carrier has built 19 "Green Libraries" with over 10,000 books and launched community awareness campaigns, including topics on cybersecurity. Corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities are maintained regularly, including providing thousands of gifts to disadvantaged children and residents in disaster-hit areas, alongside operating relief cargo flights.

Additionally, programs supporting communities, promoting gender equality, and improving living conditions in several regions continue to be deployed, paving the way for Vietnam Airlines to transition into a broader collaborative phase for its initiatives.

Previously, these programs were mostly carried out individually. Practical experience shows that while they achieved certain outcomes, these activities still require an overarching connection mechanism to boost efficiency, avoid resource fragmentation, and expand the scale of impact. This serves as the foundation for the birth of the "Green Alliance."

Establishing a Collaborative Platform, Materializing Commitments

The Alliance is oriented around three ESG pillars, with Vietnam Airlines serving as the central hub to connect and promote initiatives related to sustainable aviation, the circular economy, and community work.

Right at the event, Vietnam Airlines signed a cooperation agreement with the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development for the 2026–2030 period, focusing on green agriculture, environmental protection, and sustainable logistics supply chains. Concurrently, the airline signed a coordination regulation with the National Coordination Center for Human Organ Transplantation and the Traffic Police Department to enhance the efficiency of tissue and organ transport.

Within the framework of the "Green Alliance," several specific programs have already been deployed, such as participating in SkyTeam's The Aviation Challenge 2026, developing the "VNA Net Zero" system to track emission targets, and partnering with Tetra Pak to collect and recycle materials used on flights.

In addition, networking and exchange activities among partners were organized to share experiences and propose new cooperative ideas. Notably, the fact that many employees registered for tissue and organ donation right at the event demonstrates the humanitarian values spreading through the company's activities.

As the global aviation industry accelerates its transition toward low-emission growth models, Vietnam Airlines' rollout of the "Green Alliance" showcases a shift from commitment to action in realizing sustainable development goals. With its long-term vision, the Alliance is expected to become a multi-stakeholder partnership platform, placing environmental and social factors at the heart of corporate development strategies while materializing Vietnam's green growth targets.
