Baggage

In order to provide our passengers with comfort and convenience in their journey, Vietnam Airlines sets out the following baggage standards:

If passengers have owned tickets, they can access Manage Booking to check eligible baggage standards.

Notes:

  • Any item that exceeds weight and/or maximum size (width + height + depth) required by Vietnam Airlines may be re-packed, charged with an excess baggage fee, sent as cargo, or rejected.
  • The free baggage allowance might vary for different carriers. Please check other relevant rules if the flights are connecting to other carriers' or taking any Vietnam Airlines' codeshare flights operated by other airlines.

For safety reasons, the weight and dimensions of carry-on baggages should follow:

  • The total weight of hand baggage must not exceed:
    1. For Economy class: 12kg/26lb including 01 piece of carry-on baggage up to 10kg/22lb and 01 accessory; 
    2. For Premium Economy/Business class: 18kg/40lb including 02 pieces of carry-on baggage (up to 10kg/22lb for each piece) and 01 accessory.
  • The maximum size and three dimensions (length, width, height) of baggage should follow: 
    1. For 01 piece of carry-on baggage: 115cm (56cm x 36cm x 23cm);
    2. For 01 accessory: 40cm x 30cm x 15cm. 

In addition to the above carry-on baggage standards, passengers may take some personal items on board free of charge. Please find information about personal items here.

Carry-on baggage for children under two years old should not exceed 3kg (including food, milk, and nappy) and one foldable stroller/cradle that fits inside the overhead bins. If overhead bins are out of place, strollers/cradles are transported as checked baggage (free of charge).

Important information:

If your hand baggage exceeds the quantity, weight and dimensions specified above, the baggage must be checked.

On some routes, large carry-on baggages that do meet the standards may still need to be checked in at the gate with free of charge due to limited space of overhead bins (particularly for ATR72 or A321 aircrafts).

Important Notice:

If the weight of a piece of checked baggage exceeds the above standard, passengers will be required to re-pack their baggage and pay an excess baggage fee or consider sending their baggage as cargo. Please contact us prior to your travel.

Notice

  • Prepaid baggage fees exclude VAT.
  • Prepaid baggage is offered for flights operated by Vietnam Airlines and Pacific Airlines (except for flights operated by ATR 72) with Vietnam Airlines' tickets (738).
  • Pre-paid baggage is purchased on basis of piece (10kg and 23kg) with total dimension not exceeding 158cm.
  • Prepaid baggage must be purchased at least 06 hours before departure.
  • Pre-paid baggage is allowed to change travel date/ itinerary with equal or higher cost. The change must be made at least 06 hours before the departure time of the new flight. 
  • Prepaid baggage cannot be endorsed, refunded and/or exchanged towards other services or tickets. Exception: Completely unused prepaid baggage associated with a ticket whose itinerary originates in Korea is refundable. The refund fee is 25% of the unused prepaid baggage's value.
  • At check-in counters: If the total weight of your baggage is less than the free baggage allowance and prepaid baggage, prepaid baggage is not refundable. If the total weight/ dimensions of your baggage are in excess of the free baggage allowance and prepaid baggage, passengers must pay excess baggage fees, which are applied for the exceeding weight/dimensions according to our current policy.
  • In case passengers cannot purchase prepaid baggage on our website www.vietnamairlines.com due to technical restrictions, please purchase prepaid baggage at Vietnam Airlines ticketing offices or agents.

Special Baggage

Flying With Your Pet As Your Checked Baggage

Vietnam Airlines offer service for passengers traveling with pets on the same flight. Your pets will be delivered as checked baggage. This service is available subject to specific aircraft.

Planning for travel with your pet

Passengers traveling with pet as checked baggage should contact Vietnam Airlines branch offices for advanced reservations. It is required to make the service request at least 24 hours before their departure time.

Documents required

Passengers must contact the appropriate  quarantine office, embassy or consulate to confirm all necessary documents such as import/export permit, quarantine certificates, health certificates and rabies immunization reports. Passengers can refer information here

Restrictions for pets

We have temperature restrictions to make sure your pet isn’t exposed to extreme heat or cold. Accordingly, in case of special weather circumstances, passengers cannot travel with a pet if the current or forecasted temperature is too hot or too cold at any location on their itinerary.

Final acceptance for carriage of pet on board is subject to captain's approval. Passengers is fully informed about this in advance. They should be aware of all risks of pet carriage such as injury, sickness or death during carriage, even in case their pets are moved from cabin to cargo compartment due to the captain's approval.

At the airport

Passengers are required to be present at the airport early enough to complete all procedures before flight. Vietnam Airlines recommends passengers arrive at least two hours prior to their scheduled departure time.

At the airport, passengers will be required to sign the “Waiver of responsibility” form. Passengers can also prepare this form in advance by downloading here, complete it and bring this form to the check in counter.

Flying With Your Pet Onboard

Planning for travel with your pet

Passengers traveling with a pet onboard should contact Vietnam Airlines branch offices for advanced reservations. Passengers are required to make the service request at least 24 hours before their departure time.

(*) Pet onboard service is not provided for Business class on B787 and A350 aircraft.

Documents required

Passengers must contact the appropriate quarantine office, embassy, or consulate to confirm all necessary documents such as quarantine certificates, health certificates and rabies immunization reports. Passengers can refer information here

    • Service Dog: Permitted on board at no cost for accompanying their owner, passengers with disabilities. The dog must sit in front of the passenger. Advanced reservation for service dogs is required. Documents required are mentioned above.

      At the airport

    Passengers are required to be present at the airport early enough to complete all procedures before flight. Vietnam Airlines recommends passengers arrive at least two hours prior to their scheduled departure time.

    When checking your pet in, passengers will be required to sign the “Waiver of responsibility” form. Passengers can also download this form here, complete it and bring this form to the check-in counter.

    Cabin Baggage

    Vietnam Airlines offers the additional seat service for baggage onboard the aircraft. For fragile, bulky, or valuable items such as musical instruments, paintings, and antiquities, etc, passengers may reserve seat(s) beside them to secure their belongings during flight.

    Passengers wishing to purchase an additional seat(s) to stow belongings should contact Vietnam Airlines branch offices for advanced reservations. It is required to make the service request at least 24 hours before departure time.

    Packaging
    Cabin baggage must be securely packaged to ensure there are no sharp edges or other characteristics that might damage or puncture the seats, interior walls, other areas in the aircraft, or that could pose a risk to passengers during flight.

    Weight

    The cabin baggage weight must not exceed 75 kg per seat, and the pressure on the seat must not exceed 0.046 kg/cm2 (75 kg 40cm x 40cm total area).

      At the airport
      Passengers are required to be present at the airport early enough to complete all procedures before flight. Vietnam Airlines recommends passengers to arrive at least two hours prior to their scheduled departure time. 

      On flight
      Passengers are responsible for handling their luggage onboard the aircraft as well as during arrival and departure from the airport.

      Useful information
      Passengers should contact the appropriate local offices and respective airport authorities to familiarize themselves with all regulations and required documentation regarding their luggage. 


    Bicycles and Sizeable Baggage

    Vietnam Airlines transports bicycles and bulky items as checked baggage.

    Bulky baggage items are items with total dimensions exceeding 203 cm and/or weighing over 32kg per piece

    Bicycles to be carried as checked baggage include all kinds of regular bikes, sport-bikes, powered bikes (operated by thermo-battery or electric-battery etc…).

    • Passengers should contact Vietnam Airlines branch offices for advanced reservations. It is required to make the service request at least 24 hours before departure time.
    • For motorcycles and other motorized vehicles, please refer to the information table outlining dangerous goods.

    Packaging
    • Bulky baggage must be packed in a neat manner without sharp-pointed angles
    • Bicycles must be packed in a box that satisfies the following requirements:
    - Handle-bars are positioned along the length direction of the bike.
    - Disassemble and pack the bulky parts like: pedal, lamp, mirror, support pole…
    - The tires must be flatted before being packed

    • Passengers are required to be present at the airport early enough to complete all procedures before flight. Vietnam Airlines recommends you arrive at least two hours prior to their scheduled departure time.

    Sports Baggage

    Vietnam Airlines offers transport services for sporting equipment such as golf clubs, ski gear and diving instruments as checked baggage.

    • Golf Set: Includes 01 golf bag containing a maximum of 14 golf clubs, 12 golf balls, putting tees, and 01 pair of golfing shoes not exceeding a total weight of 23 kg. Items outside of this list will not be considered as parts of the Golf Set. 
    • Skiing/Water Ski Set: One item of snow/water skiing equipment consists of one pair of skis, one pair of ski poles, one pair of boots, one snowboard, one pair of standard water skis or one slalom water ski. 
    • Surfboard: Includes 01 wave surfing device (surfboard, paddle board, body-board, etc…) 
    • Diving Equipment: Includes 01 diving suit, 01 snorkel, 01 pair of fins, and 01 diving mask. Items such as pressure gauges and tanks are considered potentially hazardous and are prohibited.

    Sporting equipment must be securely packaged to ensure there are no sharp edge or other characteristics that might cause harm to the aircraft or passengers onboard.

    Sports Baggage

    Strollers, Wheelchairs

    Vietnam Airlines provides complimentary transportation services for foldable carriage devices such as prams, infant strollers, wheelchairs, and pushcarts.

    On the itineraries to/from The Americas, special baggage charges are applied on the portion of the journey operated by Vietnam Airlines only; special baggage policies of other operating carriers are applied for other portions of the journey. 

    * Remark for Departures from Germany

    • Max. weight of baggage at check-in counter is 32 kg per piece.
    • Pieces of luggage with more than 32 kg are transported as cargo.
    • Passengers are requested to handle cargo formalities on time.

    Note

    The refund fee shall be applied if you cancel the Special baggage service after reservation and payment.

    • Within 24 hours or after flight departure: 50% of Special baggage charge, including passenger surcharges.
    • Before 24 hours before flight:  10% of Special baggage charge including passenger surcharges.

    Vietnam Airline’s special baggage policy is applied for flights operated by Vietnam Airlines only. If your itinerary includes sectors operated by other airlines, the Special baggage policy of other airlines shall be applied for these sectors.

    Restricted Baggage

    Radioactive, Infectious,Toxic Substances, Corrosives

    Chlorine, Bleacher, Oxidizers, Mercury, Contagious Hazards, Radioactive Materials etc.

    Gases, Flammable Items

    Matches, Lighters, Flammable Liquid (for example: gasoline, cajeput etc.), Beverages Containing 70% Or More Alcohol By Volume etc.

    Other Dangerous Items

    Fire Extinguishers, Dry Ice (over 2.5 kg), Lithium Battery For Electronic Equipments (>160 Wh or >8g lithium) etc.

    Prohibited Items In Hand Baggage

    Sharp Objects, Weapons And Items That Look Alike Real Weapons

    Knife, sword, box cutter, dart and scissors etc.

    Firearms And Lookalike Items

    All types of firearms, parts of firearms, ammunition, stun guns, imitation firearms, toy guns or toys/items that look alike real weapons etc.

    Dangerous Items

    Crowbar, shovels, drills/screwdrivers, blow torch, blades or shafts longer than 6 cm, wrenches, spanners, and pliers longer than 10cm in total length etc.

    Bats (baseball, billiards), hockey sticks, golf clubs, martials art items, batons, self-defense sprays (mace/pepper) etc.

    Prohibited Items In Checked Baggage

    Currency, jewelry, camera, laptop, mobile phones and lithium battery for electronic equipments (E.G Power Bank) etc.

    Baggage Claim

    DELAYED, DAMAGED AND LOST BAGGAGE

    We aim to deliver the baggage to the correct destinations. However, sometimes baggage may be damaged, delayed, or does not reach the destinations due to inclement weather or facility requirements. Vietnam Airlines will do our utmost to resolve the problems.

    Baggage Claim

    Upon arrival at the airport, passengers recognize that their baggage has been delayed, missing, lost or damaged, please contact the staff of Vietnam Airlines at the airport and submit a claim report. Your claim report will be registered and then passengers will receive a Property Irregularity Report (PIR) with a reference number.

    Please note that PIR shall be used as the legal basis that confirms that your baggage was mishandled and shall be one of the documents for Vietnam Airlines to consider any reimbursement request for expenses and/or compensation later on.

    Passengers can download Baggage Claim Form 

    Reimbursement request for expenses and/or compensation must be sent with PIR to Vietnam Airlines within:

    • For missing and damaged baggage(*): As soon as or no later than 07 (seven) days from the date when the baggage had been/was supposed to be delivered to the passengers;
    • For delayed baggage: As soon as or no later than 21 (twenty-one) days from the date when the baggage must have been delivered.
    • (*) Vietnam Airlines is not liable for minor damage to your checked-in baggage. Please refer to the Liability Release of Checked baggage for more details

    Baggage Tracing

    We will look for baggage information through the global lost baggage search system (WorldTracer) and contact passengers as soon as possible.

    Passengers can search baggage information online at website WorldTracer if their baggage has a record number (eg HANVN12345). If passengers move to different destinations, they can update the receiving address accordingly.

    Baggage Delivery

    We will notify passengers as soon as their baggage is located and will be delivered to the specified address, subject to local customs regulations. Alternatively, passengers may collect their baggage at the airport and we shall be glad to reimburse the transport cost.

    Baggage Compensation

    In the unfortunate event that your baggage is not discovered following a search, Vietnam Airlines will issue compensation 30 - 45 days following your arrival in accordance with Vietnam Airlines’ Conditions of Carriage. A search can be extended to up to 100 days if passengers wish so.

    If passenger’s itinerary includes sectors operated by Vietnam Airlines and other airlines: In the event that your baggage is damaged, lost after arriving at your destination via another airline, passengers should inquire with the airline in question. In the case of code shares operated by other companies, please contact the operating company.

    FORGOTTEN OR MISTAKENLY TAKEN BAGGAGE

    Forgotten Articles

    Lost property that is discovered within the cabin will be kept at the airport of arrival. Depending upon what it is, the unclaimed property found in the cabin will be held by either the Vietnam Airlines baggage office or local airport authorities.

    If passengers have found personal items that have been left behind in the aircraft cabin, please contact us immediately.

    Checked baggage

    Passengers should personally pick up their own checked baggage at the airport baggage conveyor belt upon arrival. In the event that passengers have forgotten to retrieve their baggage, please contact us  immediately.

    If your baggage is not picked up, Vietnam Airlines will store it for 90 days and assess applicable storage charges. If a passenger fails to claim their baggage within 90 days, its disposal is subject to Vietnam Airlines' discretion. 

    Return of Baggage

    If your lost article is found, it will be immediately delivered to the place of your choosing. Passengers will be responsible for any shipping fees.

    Items discovered in airport facilities other than the cabin may be kept at the airport building in question, or at a police station. Please inquire using the relevant contact details.

    Taking the wrong baggage

    Please immediately return to your airport of arrival, and notify a member of staff.
