Vietnam Airlines Builds 'Green Library' for Children in Disadvantaged Remote Areas

06/09/2023

On September 5, 2023, Vietnam Airlines, the national flag carrier of Vietnam, inaugurated and donated a library building to the Đoàn Kết Primary & Secondary School on the occasion of the new school year’s opening. The implementation of this project reflects the airline’s efforts to bring tangible, long-term value to the development of a reading culture, improving the quality of teaching and learning in remote areas, while also affirming Vietnam Airlines' responsibility in community-driven activities in Vietnam.

In addition, the airline actively encouraged and mobilized agencies and units in the northern region to donate books and school supplies for the children. During this campaign, Vietnam Airlines received over 4,000 books covering various fields such as textbooks, literature, and science, along with donated school supplies from various organizations. Included in the donations were cash gifts to provide scholarships to 10 children in particularly difficult circumstances, suffering from serious illnesses.

Mr. Đặng Anh Tuấn, Deputy General Director of Vietnam Airlines, shared: “In line with the humanitarian message of the project 'Donate a Book, Lift a Future,' we hope that every child in Đoàn Kết Commune will have more opportunities to access the boundless knowledge of humanity. Additionally, we aim to build more Vietnam Airlines libraries in other disadvantaged areas, bringing the endless wealth of knowledge found in books closer to children in remote areas, promoting the reading culture, and contributing to the improvement of teaching and learning quality in local communities.”

The Đoàn Kết Primary & Secondary School – the beneficiary of the "Green Library" project – is located in a particularly disadvantaged area, where 100% of the population are ethnic minorities, and their economic life mainly depends on agriculture with unstable incomes. Previously, to meet the reading needs of over 200 students, the school had to temporarily repurpose an old equipment room into a small reading room. With inadequate facilities, poor lighting, and a lack of tables and chairs for reading, along with a limited collection of books and stories, the students' need for access to books was not fully met. Vietnam Airlines’ contribution to completing the "Green Library" project here is expected to provide a more comfortable reading space, fulfilling the students' thirst for knowledge through books.

The Vietnam Airlines library project in remote areas is part of the airline’s "Journey of Love" campaign for 2023. This meaningful journey is continuously maintained by Vietnam Airlines through various activities, such as collaborating with VietHarvest to rescue in-flight meals, conducting the "Dream Trip" program for children affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, donating miles to three healthcare organizations, and organizing charity auctions to raise funds.
