Journeys of Nurturing Love

Supporting Highland Children on Their Way to School

The path winds deep into the mountains, barely wide enough for a motorbike. Some sections run perilously along cliffs; others ascend steeply with sharp, jagged stones below. Gravel crunches under the tires, and the hairpin turns challenge even local riders.

Unable to reach by car, the VAECO Hanoi Volunteer Group had to disassemble and transport all donated supplies by motorbike across the 5-kilometer-long rugged trail to Phuc Quoc satellite school, Thong Nong District, Cao Bang Province.

Not only did they bring hundreds of lunch boxes, warm clothes, books, and storybooks, but the group also had a special gift in mind for the children in these remote areas: a fully equipped sanitation facility, including one shower room, two private toilet rooms, and one shared toilet, all clean and hygienic.

Established in 2002, Phuc Quoc is one of seven satellite schools under Luong Thong Primary School. In 2015, the school was reinforced with solid concrete classrooms, totaling five in number. However, no toilet facilities were included, as government funding covered only classroom construction. Schools were left to fund restrooms on their own.

The lack of proper sanitation facilities exposes children to risks of diarrhea, respiratory infections, and malnutrition, and in serious cases, even death.

"Go far – Reach the hardest places – Be there – Give directly" — these mottos are deeply imprinted in the hearts of each VAECO Hanoi Volunteer Group member. Inspired by their success at Phuc Quoc school (Project No. 1), the group set an annual goal of building one to two sanitation projects for children in mountainous areas.

Dedicated to "Lighting Up Hearts"

Founded on November 26, 2018, with the support of VAECO members, the VAECO Hanoi Volunteer Group began its journey with stories of compassion, love, and humanitarian trips.

Since its inception, the group has delivered meaningful donations to:

  • Thuy An Rehabilitation Center for People with Disabilities in Ba Vi, Hanoi;

  • Vo Thi Sau Primary School in Hoang Then Commune, Phong Tho District, Lai Chau Province;

  • National Children’s Hospital;

  • National Burn Hospital, among others.

All contributions and donations are carefully recorded and publicly disclosed for transparency.

A regular activity of the group includes monthly food support at the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion, where 100 meal boxes are distributed to underprivileged patients. Currently, they also deliver 120 meal boxes to E Hospital in Hanoi.

Instead of relying solely on outside donations, the group creatively funds their charity through a small breakfast stall set up twice a week (Mondays and Thursdays) at the company's entrance. Nutrient-rich food and refreshing drinks, neatly packed in eco-friendly paper bags, are enthusiastically supported by VAECO staff.

For the members of the VAECO Hanoi Volunteer Group, the more they engage in volunteer work, the more they cherish these “heart-warming” journeys. That’s why nothing can deter them from continuing their mission to spread positive energy.

On May 19, 2023, the group delivered gifts and officially handed over two new sanitation facilities at Na Po and Rao schools in Na Khe Commune, Yen Minh District, Ha Giang Province — extremely underprivileged, border-adjacent areas.

Na Po School (22km from Na Khe center) serves 48 children and 2 teachers, with only three classrooms (35m² each) and no restrooms. Teachers from the lowlands cannot commute daily and must rely on temporary accommodation. Rao School (27km away) has 28 children and only a makeshift restroom made of tarpaulin.

After consulting and receiving approval from local authorities, the Bach Dich Border Post, and Na Khe preschool, the group decided to fund the construction of two restrooms — each with 3 rooms: a male toilet, a female toilet, and a shared restroom/shower for teachers — complete with water tanks, faucets, sinks, and lighting. The total investment was approximately 70 million VND. These are the 7th and 8th sanitation projects completed by the group, now in use to improve hygiene for both teachers and students.

The group’s biggest hope now is to continue building one to two restrooms annually for schools still in need. Achieving this requires significant material and emotional support. But based on what the VAECO Volunteer Group has accomplished, there's every reason to believe in and support them so that these beautiful dreams can come true.

The group also hopes to raise awareness among more organizations and benefactors about the severe lack of proper sanitation facilities in highland schools. Their surveys indicate that almost every remote school lacks even basic restrooms.
