1. Introduction to Vung Bau Beach
1.1. Where is Vung Bau Beach
Vung Bau Beach is located on the northwestern coast of Phu Quoc Island, in Kien Giang Province. This peaceful and relatively untouched beach is nestled between Ganh Dau and Cua Can, offering a serene escape from the more crowded tourist areas. Besides, Vung Bau Beach is located between Bai Dai and Ong Lang Beach – the two famous beaches in Phu Quoc. Therefore, it is very easy for visitors to find this attraction.
The landscape is characterized by soft golden sands, calm turquoise waters, and a backdrop of lush green hills and dense forests. Its crescent-shaped bay is ideal for swimming, kayaking, and enjoying nature in a quiet setting.
1.2. Origin of the Name
There are two main theories behind the name “Vung Bau”. The first theory suggests that the name comes from the beach’s unique geographical shape. Surrounded by high mountains, the area forms a large, oval-shaped bay - "vung" means bay, and "bau" refers to its gourd-like, rounded shape.
The second theory is based on local stories, which say that in the past, wild bottle gourd plants (“bau” in Vietnamese) used to grow abundantly around the area. These plants may have inspired the name that locals still use today.
