History of Bach Ma National Park

The park's fascinating history begins in 1932 when the summit of Bach Ma was selected by the French engineer Girard to become a hill station for the colonial administration of Hue. Over the years, a thriving village with 139 villas and hotels was created, making it a popular summer retreat for the French elite.

By 1937, the number of holiday homes had reached 139 and it became known as the "Dalat of central Vietnam". Most of the visitors were high-ranking French VIPs. The area was first protected as a forest reserve in 1937, declared a protected area by South Vietnam in 1962, and finally established as Bach Ma National Park in 1991 under the Ministry of Forestry.

From Hue (45 - 55km)

Bach Ma National Park lies about 45 to 55 kilometers south of Hue, depending on the route taken. The most common route is via National Highway 1A heading toward Da Nang. From the city center, drive south on Highway 1A until you reach Phu Loc Commune. Look for a blue road sign on the right side indicating directions to Bach Ma. Turn right as instructed, and follow the paved road leading straight to the base of the national park.

• Private taxi or car service: A convenient option for groups of up to five people or travelers with limited time. A one-way trip from Phu Bai Airport to the park entrance typically costs around VND 500,000.

There are two main ways to travel from Da Nang to Bach Ma National Park, both following National Highway 1A heading north. The faster route is through Hai Van Tunnel, while the scenic route over Hai Van Pass offers stunning coastal views. After passing the tunnel or the pass, continue toward Lang Co Town, then follow the road signs pointing to Bach Ma.

Alternatively, a popular and more detailed route from Da Nang involves traveling approximately 60 kilometers north on National Highway 1A, passing over Hai Van Pass, and continuing until you reach Cau Hai Market – a well-known spot beside Cau Hai Lagoon. From the market, travel another 1 kilometer and turn left onto Tran Dinh Tuc Street, which leads directly to the gate of Bach Ma National Park. Transportation options are similar to those from Hue.
