The Persevering Journey to Restore a Smile for Y Nhem’s Child

04/12/2023
Y Nhem is an indigenous Ba Na woman from Kon Tum. She and her husband own a coffee farm, but it’s not enough to support their family, so they both work as laborers on a rubber farm to make ends meet for their three young children, as well as support the extended family. They have three children, but unfortunately, one of them was born with a cleft lip and palate. Y Nhem only discovered this after the birth of her son, and as a mother, the pain she felt for her child and herself was overwhelming. A-Lis Nhật is her son, now 8 years old, who has undergone two surgeries. Due to the severity of his condition, he couldn’t breastfeed as an infant, and Y Nhem had to feed him with a bottle. As he grew up, he remained frail, and the harsh conditions of the Central Highlands left a visible mark on his hair and skin.

Their family was fortunate to receive help from many people, including the nuns at a church in Kon Tum, so Nhật was able to undergo surgery to repair his cleft lip and palate. However, due to the severity of the deformity, his mouth still hasn’t been fully repaired, and he needs more surgeries to close the gaps in the roof of his mouth and to correct the scars on his lip.

In a program by Operation Smile in Buon Ma Thuot, Nhật was able to receive surgery once again. The doctors in the program helped him repair part of the roof of his mouth. Nhật is a very obedient child, and although he was nervous before the surgery, he was also hopeful and calm as he waited his turn with his mother. The surgery was a success, and with tears in her eyes, Y Nhem hugged her son, feeling a sense of relief as he took another step in his healing journey.

One day after the surgery, even though there was still some pain from the wound, mother and son left the hospital filled with joy. They had received kind care and the best medical treatment possible. While this may not be the final surgery for Nhật, as he will need further treatments to fully recover, his courage, the love and support from his mother and family, as well as the assistance from the community and sponsors, will continue to guide him on his journey toward healing.
