A Letter from Nam Dong Continues the "Fly Light to Hue" Story
From sustainable flights to meaningful community initiatives, Vietnam Airlines’ "Fly Light to Hue" project continues its journey at Nam Dong High School. A letter of gratitude from the school's faculty and students highlights the tangible outcomes of the program—ranging from revamped learning spaces and upcycled products to inspiring career guidance sessions for students in the mountainous region.
From Flights to Community
"Fly Light to Hue" took flight on flight VN7545 from Hanoi to Hue with the active participation of all passengers. Among them, 92% opted for online and biometric check-in, significantly reducing paper usage, while many proactively traveled with light luggage and brought their own reusable cups and tumblers.
In parallel, Vietnam Airlines implemented key operational solutions—ranging from engine wash procedures, weather-optimized flight paths, and precise potable water load calculations tailored to actual needs, to deploying lightweight cargo containers. Together, these measures effectively reduced aircraft weight, fuel consumption, and carbon emissions.
The "light flight" landed in Hue, but the journey continued through a new lens. From August 30 to September 1, at the Hue Wonderverse Music Fest 2026, Vietnam Airlines hosted a plastic collection booth that guided festivalgoers through four interactive green stations. Bringing a plastic bottle to the booth served as the starting point for participants to collect, sort, interact, and complete the "Fly Light Warrior" challenge.
The plastic bottles gathered at the booth also forged a meaningful connection between the festival and the next destination of "Fly Light to Hue." Following collection, the plastic waste was recycled into tables, chairs, and bookshelves, which were then delivered to Nam Dong High School to help build the Green Library presented by Vietnam Airlines for the new school year.
A New Life Cycle from Old Materials
The recycled products arrived at Nam Dong right when the school urgently needed to restore its reading and study spaces following severe flood damage in 2025. The old reading room was seriously degraded, while 5 computer sets and approximately 1,500 books were either swept away or ruined. With over 24% of the student body belonging to ethnic minority communities facing economic hardship, restoring access to a dedicated space for reading, studying, and technology was a deeply cherished hope for both teachers and students.
Addressing these practical needs, Vietnam Airlines partnered with the school to transform an old lab room into a vibrant Green Library. The upgraded space features 7 computer sets, 2 air conditioners, an expanded collection of books contributed by airline employees, and a complete system of tables, chairs, and bookshelves crafted entirely from recycled materials.
This initiative creates a tangible link between sustainable development and everyday life. Concepts like waste collection, recycling, and the circular economy are no longer abstract ideas to the students—they are physically embodied in the very library furniture they interact with daily.
In the thank-you letter addressed to Vietnam Airlines, Nam Dong High School noted that the recycled products delivered a visual, practical lesson in green living, environmental protection, and community responsibility. Materials once considered spent were repurposed into durable desks, chairs, and bookshelves to directly serve the students' daily learning and reading needs.
This creates a clear bridge between the two pillars of "Fly Light to Hue": minimizing environmental impact in aviation operations while delivering meaningful local value to the communities Vietnam Airlines serves.
Sowing Dreams in Nam Dong
The Green Library was not the only initiative Vietnam Airlines brought to Nam Dong High School on the opening day of the new school year.
Alongside the library launch, the airline held a career guidance session featuring female Pilot Lương Khánh Linh from Flight Crew Division 919. Her personal journey through flight training, daily operations, and the aviation environment gave students a firsthand look at a career path that was previously unfamiliar to many.
According to the faculty and students of Nam Dong High School, the female pilot's presence and heartfelt story helped spark inspiration, motivating students to excel in their studies and visualize broader career possibilities for their future.
If the computers unlock expanded access to information and the books enrich their knowledge base, the career story shared directly by a Vietnam Airlines team member offers a distinct experience—an opportunity to meet, ask questions, and learn firsthand about working in the aviation industry.
Following the opening day of the new school year, Nam Dong High School sent a letter of gratitude to the Executive Board, the Communications Department, the Youth Union, and the Vietnam Airlines Branch in Hue. The school also committed to managing, preserving, and maximizing the utility of the library, ensuring it remains a nurturing space for reading culture and a launching pad for future generations of students to access knowledge.
For the Vietnam Airlines team members involved, the letter from Nam Dong serves as a heartfelt and tangible testament to the meaningful impact of the "Fly Light to Hue" campaign. From in-flight weight reduction measures and encouraging small shifts in passenger habits to collecting, recycling, and donating functional items to schools, the green living message has been converted into lasting everyday value.
A desk, a bookshelf, or a book within the Nam Dong Green Library represents small yet concrete outcomes of the "Fly Light" philosophy championed by Vietnam Airlines. Beginning in the air with the active support of passengers and crew, "Fly Light" continues to generate sustainable value at the destination of Hue. In this spirit, the heartwarming response from the teachers and students of Nam Dong stands as a meaningful tribute to Vietnam Airlines' "Fly Light to Hue" initiative.
