The temple was originally built during the Ly Dynasty in an ancient architectural style, consisting of three sections: the Front Hall, Middle Hall, and Back Sanctuary, in the shape of the Chinese character "Dinh" (resembling a hoe-shaped design). In 1962, the temple was recognized as a national cultural heritage site by the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism.
According to legend, the temple honors a young woman who was a healer, dedicated to helping the poor. After disobeying her parents, she was exiled and later married a poor man named Coi. After contracting leprosy, she was cured by an elderly woman using herbal medicine and water from the Vung Tien spring. Once healed, she and her husband dedicated their lives to gathering herbs to help others. One day, they went to the mountaintop and never returned, and their home became the site of Co Tien Temple.
