Believed to have formed over 2 million years ago, Phong Nha Cave is one of Vietnam’s oldest natural wonders. The name “Phong Nha” translates to “wind through teeth”, inspired by the eerie sound of wind whistling through the shimmering white stalactites inside the cave, resembling air passing through tightly clenched teeth.
Its exploration history dates back to the late 19th century, when French missionary Léopold Michel Cadière first surveyed the cave. From 1990 onward, the British Royal Caving Association conducted comprehensive expeditions in collaboration with Vietnamese scientists, earning it world records for features like the most beautiful underground river, the widest cave entrance, and the most stunning stalactite formations.

Note: The boat rental fee is 550,000 VND for solo travelers or small groups of 1 - 2 people. However, if you're looking to save money, you can wait to share a boat with others. Once the boat fills up with 12 passengers, the total cost is 850,000 VND (USD 32.62), which comes out to just around 70,000 VND per person (USD 2.69), a great deal for a full experience.
Visitors start their journey at the Phong Nha boat station, taking a motorized boat along the Son River for about 30 - 40 minutes. As the boat nears the cave entrance, the engine is turned off, allowing it to drift silently into the cave, offering a peaceful and immersive experience.
