History of Bach Ma National Park
The park's fascinating history begins in 1932 when the summit of Bach Ma was selected by the French engineer Girard to become a hill station for the colonial administration of Hue. Over the years, a thriving village with 139 villas and hotels was created, making it a popular summer retreat for the French elite.
By 1937, the number of holiday homes had reached 139 and it became known as the "Dalat of central Vietnam". Most of the visitors were high-ranking French VIPs. The area was first protected as a forest reserve in 1937, declared a protected area by South Vietnam in 1962, and finally established as Bach Ma National Park in 1991 under the Ministry of Forestry.

From Hue (45 - 55km)
Bach Ma National Park lies about 45 to 55 kilometers south of Hue, depending on the route taken. The most common route is via National Highway 1A heading toward Da Nang. From the city center, drive south on Highway 1A until you reach Phu Loc Commune. Look for a blue road sign on the right side indicating directions to Bach Ma. Turn right as instructed, and follow the paved road leading straight to the base of the national park.
Several transportation options are available for reaching the park from Hue:

From Da Nang (60 - 70km)
There are two main ways to travel from Da Nang to Bach Ma National Park, both following National Highway 1A heading north. The faster route is through Hai Van Tunnel, while the scenic route over Hai Van Pass offers stunning coastal views. After passing the tunnel or the pass, continue toward Lang Co Town, then follow the road signs pointing to Bach Ma.
Alternatively, a popular and more detailed route from Da Nang involves traveling approximately 60 kilometers north on National Highway 1A, passing over Hai Van Pass, and continuing until you reach Cau Hai Market – a well-known spot beside Cau Hai Lagoon. From the market, travel another 1 kilometer and turn left onto Tran Dinh Tuc Street, which leads directly to the gate of Bach Ma National Park. Transportation options are similar to those from Hue.

The ideal time to explore Bach Ma National Park is from December to April, during the dry season. During these months, the weather is generally clear and trails are more accessible, allowing visitors to fully enjoy the waterfalls, hiking paths, and panoramic views without interruptions from heavy rain.
On the contrary, the rainy season from May to November often brings slippery and muddy trails, increasing the risk of accidents and limiting visibility of scenic spots. Traveling in the dry season also helps avoid disruptions due to sudden weather changes common in mountain areas.

From misty mountain peaks to hidden waterfalls and colonial relics, Bach Ma National Park is home to a wide array of breathtaking sights. Below are the top attractions you shouldn’t miss on your visit – each offering a unique window into the park’s natural beauty and cultural history.
The Do Quyen Waterfall, named after the vibrant rhododendron (Do Quyen) trees that bloom profusely in March and April, cascades down nearly 300 meters through lush forest. The trail to this waterfall starts about 1.5 kilometers from Bach Ma’s main road and takes approximately 30 minutes on a gentle slope through diverse vegetation.
Since early 2024, you can also experience an adventurous zipline with a length of 85 meters and a starting point at an altitude of 350 meters above sea level. The price for one slide is VND 120,000/visitor.
Tips: Visit during dry season (December - April) for optimal trail conditions and clearer waterfall views. Bring waterproof gear as mountain weather can change rapidly.

The Tri Sao Waterfall offers a quieter, more secluded waterfall experience within Bach Ma National Park’s extensive trail system. Known for its multiple tiers, the waterfall flows gracefully beneath dense forest canopies, creating serene natural pools ideal for photography and peaceful reflection.
Access to Tri Sao Waterfall involves a moderate hike along a trail rich with rare orchids and endemic Vietnamese flora, showcasing the park’s incredible biodiversity. This less frequented spot is perfect for visitors seeking tranquility away from the more popular waterfalls.
Perched at an altitude of 1,450 meters, the Sea Observatory is the highest point within Bach Ma National Park, offering visitors spectacular panoramic views. From this vantage point, one can see sweeping vistas of Cau Hai Dam, Lang Co Sea, Truoi Lake, and the majestic Truong Son mountain range.
Also known as Vong Hai Dai or the "Skywalk," this viewpoint is especially breathtaking at sunrise and sunset when the surrounding landscape is bathed in warm, golden light. The clear morning hours are between 06:00 AM and 7:00 AM.

Visitors can explore several villa sites along the park’s main road, where interpretive signs offer background information about their historical significance and the daily life of the French colonial residents.

The Five Lakes area in Bach Ma National Park consists of a cluster of 5 natural lakes nestled close together in the heart of the mountainous forest. Each lake has its own unique charm, shaped by the interplay of flowing streams, rocky formations, and surrounding forest trees.
Starting near the Kim Giao Villas, the Ngu Ho trail winds through diverse terrains over approximately 1.5 kilometers, leading visitors to this tranquil cluster of lakes. The trail takes about an hour of continuous walking, revealing a series of peaceful waterfalls and crystal-clear lakes along the way.
